First up is Death in Venice (1973). An intense and moving portrayal of tortured composer Gustave Aschenbach (loosely based on Mahler). Set in the early twentieth century, he is a frail middle-aged man in ill health who travels to Venice to seek rest after a period of artistic and personal stress. He is fascinated by the concept of beauty, and becomes obsessed by a beautiful Polish teenage boy staying in his hotel. Starring Dirk Bogarde.
After our meal we return to Venice for Don’t Look Now (1973), a psychological thriller based on a story by Daphne Du Maurier. A married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter are in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is a psychic and brings a warning from ‘beyond’. Starring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, it is one of those films once seen, never forgotten
