Oscar Night: Moonlight

Again we are celebrating Academy Awards night with last year’s winner of the Best Film category, ‘Moonlight’. Described as ‘captivating, poignant, disturbing, beautiful’, the film portrays the early life of Chiron, a gay African American growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami, as he struggles to discover his identity, focussing on three chapters of his life – childhood, adolescence and young adulthood.

This ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production, originally created for Frankfurt Opera.
For Carmen he has devised a far from traditional version, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character.

Tennessee Williams’ twentieth century masterpiece Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is a searing, poetic story of a family’s fight for survival.
The cast includes Sienna Miller (High-Rise, American Sniper), Jack O’Connell (Money Monster, Skins) and Colm Meaney (Layer Cake, Star Trek), and is directed by Benedict Andrews, known for his smash hit A Streetcar Named Desire which was broadcast through NT Live in 2014.
Produced by the Young Vic following the success of Yerma, this performance was captured live during the show’s limited twelve week run at the Apollo Theatre in the West End

Berliner Philharmoniker: Sir Simon Rattle’s Farewell Concert
