We will be showing Massenet’s Cinderella, live from the Glyndebourne Festival, on Sunday 30th June at 5.30pm
With its combination of enchanting love story and broad, burlesque comedy, Cinderella is one of the great operatic fairytales – a Cinderella that looks back to Charles Perrault’s original story in all its richness and ambiguity. Massenet’s sensuous, Belle Epoque fairytale is gilded with lavish orchestral textures and glittering vocal writing, drawing on everything from baroque dances to Wagner-inspired chromaticism to bring its story to colourful life, conjuring a world of infinite musical and emotional variety.
The classic Cinderella story is told with composer Massenet’s sensuous and lavish score. Glyndebourne favourite and international star Danielle de Niese plays the titular role in this glittering and colourful opera.
The Times ‘Fiona Shaw…turns this fin-de-siècle confection into a complex modern-day fairytale and a story of psychological transformation.’
The Daily Telegraph ‘Fiona Shaw’s direction gracefully explores the story’s psychological resonances. ’
